Two New EFAS Travelling Fellows Complete Travels in US

DJO congratulates Dr. Peter Bock, Dept. of Orthopaedic Surgery, Danube Hospital, Wien, Austria and Dr. Stefan Hofstaetter, Resident of Orthopaedics, Klinikum Wels, Austria for successfully completing their 2007 EFAS/DJO-Aircast Fellowship travels in the USA.

This new travelling fellowship was launched as a joint initiative by DJO & Aircast in association with the EFAS Fellowship Committee, to offer EFAS members, every second year, the opportunity to travel internationally, visiting leading foot and ankle specialists all over the world. Peter and Stefan fought off stiff competition to claim this educational grant including two weeks in the USA. Their itinerary started with two days at the Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore with Dr Mark Myerson where they witnessed surgery on patients with severe fore- and hind-foot deformities. Their next stop in Baltimore was at the Union Memorial Hospital with Dr Lew Schon where they were shown revision surgery following unsuccessful primary flatfoot surgery that they had never seen before and visited the new laboratories for tendon research and their biomechanical lab.

Following a weekend sightseeing in Washington DC they headed South to meet Dr Mark Easly and Dr Jim Nunley at the Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina where Dr Easly used the very latest locking plate device during complex tibiotalocalcaneal fusion surgery. Their final visit was to the Orthocarolina Institute, a major centre for foot and ankle ‘sportorthopaedics’ headed up by Dr Robert Anderson where they saw complex foot corrections with Ilizarov type frames as well as arthroscopies and surgery on the sesamoid bone complex.

Both Peter and Stefan found the trip very rewarding both professionally and personally and made a presentation describing their experiences at the EFAS Instructional Course in Athens on 22nd June 2007.
