DJO @ MX Grand Prix Races: It all started with KTM as a neighbour… | Autumn 2007

Six years ago our Belgian office, located in a business centre in Wavre, had the pleasure of having KTM’s Belgium Headquarters next door.

Here we noticed daily visits from limping riders, passionate journalists, assertive managers and negotiating distributors who gave the whole floor a noisy but lively buzz and a good sense of what the Motor-scene and its “entourage” was all about.

It did not take long for one of the visitors, Harry Borms, a journalist with 30 years experience in the motor world, to poke his nose around our door, attracted by a display of Armor Knee braces. This was the beginning of what has now been a six years’ exclusive presence at the Motocross Grand Prix Races.

For the first two years we sponsored the Care-DonJoy Honda team run by Alfred Uytdewillegen that became the DonJoy Sinisalo Yamaha team the second year. It was a great experience being “back stage”, and being treated as if we were part of the team which enabled us to achieve a greater understanding of this exciting sport, its riders and their gear.

This two year experience not only gave us a good feel for what risks the riders were taking, how extremely physically demanding their sport is and how devoted these young riders are to their sport, but also how unprotected they still were in terms of preventative support. That is when we took the decision to better inform the riders of the protective gear available from DonJoy's range and in particular our high quality protective 4-point braces, such as the Armor and the Defiance.

As a result of this commitment we were the first company, in 2004, to sign an exclusive agreement with Harry Borms, the Grand Prix Paddock Manager, to take a 5mx5m stand in the Paddock area at every Grand Prix event.

Four years’ later we are still as committed to educating the riders on why it is so important to protect themselves, especially their knees. At our stand, supporters and riders can pick up a copy of our new dedicated Motorsports catalogue, ask for more information or try on our range of braces.

We are also working on some new apparel in association with journalist and test rider, Thierry Sarasyn, whose knee has for many years been successfully protected by a custom made DonJoy Defiance. The 2007 MX season finished last month with a Grand Finale in the USA featuring the “Race of the Nations”. Following this year’s successful season, we are now planning our involvement for next season which starts in March. If you would like to join us as our guest at any of the Grand Prix events, please let us know.
