The Tony Cairoli Show Goes On

After 11 of the 16 Grand Prix, DonJoy rider Tony Cairoli still holds a firm grasp on the lead in the World Motocross Championship. Cairoli is the only rider to have won 4 GP’s this year and he came very close to winning a 5th one in Sweden. On the one line track of Udevalla, Tony Cairoli had a hard time passing other riders in the first heat as he worked his way up to 4th after a not so good start.
In the final heat, Cairoli only had holeshot specialist Max Nagl in front of him. The DonJoy rider quickly worked his way past the German and then never looked back after that. Cairoli won the heat and that was good enough to go 2nd overall. With 5 GP’s to go, the Sicilian now holds a 53 point lead over the German Nagl.
The GP riders now have a 3 week break before they head for the infamous track of Lommel in Belgium. In the first week of August, Cairoli hopes to start on the final straight that should lead him to his first MX1 world title. “I never thought I would have this lead with 5 races to go”, said the Italian. “But it’s obvious now that I am the title favourite. I’ll take a week off now and go home to Sicily, then I’ll be back in Lommel where I live, so the GP is like a home race for me. I hope to do very well there and score good points. I’m happy with my season so far and happy with the support DonJoy and Compex have given me this year. They’ve been an important part in my racing.”
Fans who want to see Antonio Cairoli in action, shouldn’t miss the GP in Belgium on the 1st and 2nd August. Make sure you drop by the DJO booth in the paddock too, top riders like Everts, Cairoli and Strijbos will be at the autograph sessions!
