Record Breaking Win For Cairoli

Since the German GP in Teutschenthal, Antonio Cairoli is back where he belongs: on top of the podium. The DonJoy rider was without a doubt the strongest man in the MX1 class. Cairoli won the Saturday qualifying heat thanks to a great move on the last lap. He passed home rider and crowd favourite Max Nagl just a few corners before the finish line.

It looked like he would do the same in the first heat of the GP, but this time Nagl was able to hold on to the lead. “It took me some time before I could pass Josh Coppins”, said Cairoli. “Then I took it easy for a few laps and with 10 minutes to go I began chasing race leader Nagl. I caught up with him on the last lap, but I couldn’t pass him without taking big chances. I thought about the championship and settled for second.”

Nagl had clearly dug deep to fight off Cairoli, because in the second heat he was too tired to put up a fight. Cairoli started in second, took the lead after three laps and after that he never looked back. While Nagl was tired after the battle in the first heat, Cairoli was still on top of his game. “I feel great now”, said the championship leader. “After the crash in Mallory Park I had a hard time. Compex helped me to recover fully and quickly and I really like this track, it has a lot of different lines. With a few quick starters like Nagl on the grid, it’s important to be able to pass.” The double world champ now holds a solid 41 point lead over his closest rival, David Philippaerts.

Cairoli’s victory in Teutschenthal was his 28th. That means he is now officially the most succesful Italian MX rider ever, beating Alessio Chiodi’s record of 27 GP wins. Cairoli is still far from the all time GP winning record of his fellow Compex rider Stefan Everts. The Belgian has won 101 GP’s in his career, but just like Cairoli, Stefan Everts is also committed to using DonJoy and Compex. At least at that level, they are equal.
