DJO Orthopaedic Update 29th March 2007

                                                    WEAK AT THE KNEES?

DJO, a market-leading global company best known for its innovative non-operative orthopaedic and bracing products, under the DonJoy® and Aircast® brands, has harnessed its exceptional market knowledge, together with its awareness of market trends through research and clinical data, to deliver a series of ‘Orthopaedic Updates’.

DJO was founded in the Carlsbad, California garage of Philadelphia Eagles American Football player Mark Nordquist in 1978. Nordquist, who wrapped an old inner tube around his unstable knee for support, teamed up with two of his friends to explore the possibilities. The first products for the company - then named simply DonJoy after the two men's wives, Donna and Joy, wore ‘knee sleeves’ constructed from old neoprene wetsuits. This concept attracted interest and the company soon embarked on a research and engineering programme that would advance the world of bracing.  The company is now a global provider of products and services that promote musculoskeletal and vascular health, and has become the trusted brand with consumers and medical practitioners alike. Their product range comprises over 700 different devices, which include rigid and soft braces to support almost every part of the body, cold therapy systems and bone growth stimulators.

With the emergence of the new generation of DonJoy’s high-tech knee braces patients either suffering from knee OA, seeking relief of pain and instability pre- or post- knee surgery, or wishing to avoid the surgeon’s knife altogether are now spoilt for choice.

                                                          (The human knee)

For those people who suffer OA pain, DonJoy have led the way with proven innovative technological advancements in the design of effective bracing.

The knee ligaments - Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL)Lateral Collateral Ligament (LCL)Posterior Cruciate Ligament (PCL) and th Medial Collateral Ligament (MCL), are often damaged and weakened through injury or repetitive use.   For the many people, both sports people, professional or recreational, and those who simply lead an active day-to-day life who suffer with knee ligament problems, DonJoy’s products have revolutionised patients’ lives. DonJoy have pioneered technological concepts that give them the leading edge. For example, their FourcePoint™ brace hinge is the only hinge clinically proven to protect the ACL.

The ‘Defiance III’  is DonJoy's bespoke hallmark knee brace. Combining the ultimate in technology, materials and design, this lightweight brace provides durable support for moderate to severe ACL, PCL, MCL and LCL instabilities. Its low-profile design fits comfortably underneath clothing and sportswear and is the brace of choice used by the US ski team.  As the strongest of DonJoy's functional braces, the custom, carbon composite Defiance is recommended for high collision (performance and extreme) sports, while its featherweight materials and custom fit also make it the brace of choice for day-to-day activities. The ‘Fource Point’ – FourcePoint™ technology by DonJoy was developed to further protect the ACL and enhance the ‘4-Points-of-leverage’™ brace design. The patented FourcePoint™ hinges are designed to react during leg extension and offer an increasing resistance in the last 25 degrees of extension in order to reduce extension shock and increase posterior tibial loads.
