Cairoli Gives Donjoy its first MX1 World Title

In a thrilling Grand Prix in the Netherlands, Tony Cairoli did what nobody expected; one race before the end of the season, he clinched the MX1 World Title. Going into the Dutch GP the DonJoy rider didn’t feel in top shape. A piece of cartilage that was still in his knee from last years knee injury caused him quite a lot of pain. Tony rode through the pain and used the DonJoy Defiance III braces to keep his knees stable. After a solid 5th place in the first heat, he had extended his World Championship lead to 48 points. He only needed 2 more points on top of that to become the 2009 champ, and that’s exactly what he got. After 20 minutes he passed his only remaining rival, the German Max Nagl and that gave him the points he needed to become the 2009 MX1 World Champion.
“This is a dream come true”, he smiled from the podium. “It’s my first season in MX1. I would have been very happy with a top 5 finish, so this is more than I expected. And with the pain in my knee, I was unsure of how the race here in the Dutch sand would go, but DonJoy has been a great help. Without the Defiance III braces, I wouldn’t even have been able to ride. This is all a bit too much for me now, I’m lost for words…”
